In Person with...

The Law Students’ Society of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) is organising a talk entitled ‘In Person with Professor Harry Roque’ in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, a component of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the movement).

In Person with Professor Harry Roque is a talk which deals with the topic of International Humanitarian Law particularly its relevancy in the present world. International Humanitarian Law also known as Law of War is essential in ensuring respect for humanity during times of armed conflict. IHL is primarily codified in the Geneva Conventions. Nelson Mendela was quoted saying, “The Geneva Conventions… continue to remind us most forcefully of our common obligation to care for each other…” It is hoped that with this talk, the participants would gain a better understanding of the laws applicable in times of armed conflict, and that even wars have limits.

Our responsibility to care for each other does not end at the barrel of a gun; Humanity must exist not only during times of peace but also during times of war.
Professor Harry Roque is the Director of the Institute of International Legal Studies, Law Center, University of the Philippines and is an international humanitarian law expert in the region. He is the first Asian to be admitted into practice in the International Criminal Court (ICC). He has also be admitted to practice in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). It is hoped with the benefit of his experience the participants will be given a new perspective and appreciation for International Humanitarian Law.

This talk is in conjunction with the movement’s “Our World. Your Move.” Campaign and the AIKOL Festival 2009.

“Our World. Your Move.” Campaign which was launched by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement serves as a reminder to everyone of his or her individual responsibility to lessen human suffering. This campaign is also to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle of Solferino which led to the birth of the Movement, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the 60th anniversary of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949.
